The Big Fish

Our Story

Locally, the Big Fish, which is proudly displayed in the front window, is an icon for our restaurant, The Big Fish Grill. Internationally, however, the Big Fish has much more history. He originates from London and claims the Billingsgate fish market as his home. The market he calls home is a British landmark that flourished for more than a century. Established by the Romans over 1,800 years ago, the market is renowned for giving birth to the term "Fishmongers". After Roman occupation, the Saxons landed fish there before the Norman conquest of 1066. The most recent owners, the city of London, have operated the market since 1699. In recent years, patrons would gather daily to watch as over 500 fish sellers and porters clattered to unload, sell and reload their daily average of 250 tons of fish. It was during this time when our friendly fish proudly oversaw the daily activities of the market. Now that the Billingsgate market has closed its doors, the Big Fish has decided to retire right here in Kirkland. When questioned about receiving a fresh coat of paint as a retirement gift, the Big Fish declined, stating that his hand-carved, weathered appearance reminded him of home and added to his character. We at the Big Fish Grill couldn't agree more.
